THE WRITING OF ‘SILENCE! ALL STAND’

In 2018, after family law solicitor Bev Reaston listened to a paper about the history of the District Court in Cairns, it sparked the idea that she would like to present a paper on the history of the Family Court in Cairns. So she spoke to colleagues, counsellors, and judges in Cairns, Mackay, and Townsville, diligently making notes of their conversations. She soon realised the volume of the research she collated would be better suited to a book and set about writing one. But between managing serious work commitments and a family there simply was not enough time in the day. Bev was committed to her dream and put a call out on social media enquiring whether anyone knew of a writer or historian to help bring the book to completion. Through a shared connection, Bev was introduced to Claire Levi, a freelance historian based in Melbourne. This presentation details how the two women connected and how they managed to complete Bev’s book despite living at opposite ends of the country.
